Legong Dancer

Legong Dance is one of Bali’s most beautiful and refined traditional dances. It is famous for its elegant movements, expressive eyes, intricate finger gestures, and richly decorated golden costumes. Legong developed within Bali’s royal courts, particularly during the 19th century. Traditionally, it was performed by young female dancers who underwent extensive training from an early age. The word Legong is often associated with graceful dance movements accompanied by the gamelan orchestra. The dance combines precise choreography with expressive storytelling. The dancers use a distinctive technique called seledet, moving their eyes sharply from side to side in rhythm with the music. Their facial expressions help communicate the story. Dancers wear elaborate golden headdresses, colourful costumes, decorative jewellery and often hold fans as part of their performance.
